A traditional component of natural soap with a legacy extending across centuries, tallow remains a valued element in modern soap production, coexisting with various other enriching oils. In the realm of cold process soap crafting, tallow-based soaps are acknowledged for imparting hardness and producing a creamy, stable lather in bars. Boasting a blend of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids, tallow contributes to the hydrating characteristics of the soap, effectively helping prevent the skin from becoming dry after use.

It's important to note that some people may choose not to use tallow due to personal or ethical reasons, as it is an animal-derived product. In such cases, there are various plant-based alternatives available.

The tallow we sell is a soft, refined, bleached, deodorized baking tallow supplied by a Canadian food oil provider. As is typical for products in the food industry, it includes commonly used food preservatives.

Using Tallow in cold process soap making offers several benefits:

Hardness and Longevity: Tallow contributes to the hardness of soap, making it long-lasting and durable. This means your soap bar will hold its shape well and won't dissolve quickly.

Creamy Lather: Tallow soap tends to produce a creamy and stable lather. The lather is often described as rich and luxurious, providing a smooth and pleasant feel.

Moisturizing Properties: Tallow contains a blend of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids that can be beneficial for the skin. These fats help to moisturize and nourish the skin, helping leave it feeling soft and hydrated. This can be particularly beneficial for individuals with dry or sensitive skin.

Hardness: Tallow contributes to the hardness of the soap bar. A harder soap bar tends to last longer and withstands moisture better, leading to a more durable product.

Historical Significance: For those interested in traditional or historical soap making, tallow has been a staple ingredient for centuries. Using tallow in soap making can be a nod to traditional methods and recipes.

Cost-Effective: Tallow is often more cost-effective than some specialty oils, making it an economical choice for soap makers, especially when crafting large batches.

Perfect for my purposes!

The reviews seem to vary on here about this tallow. I actually really enjoy that it's softer, therefore I can just put it straight into containers to sell, as well as adding things to it. I can make it harder by adding beeswax or jojoba wax or mango butter etc.

It's food grade (as the listing states, it comes from a food distribution company), so tried it to pop popcorn and I haven't had anything as good as that before (just for the popping part)... I always used coconut oil.

I think because the product is a food grade product, therefore has a couple stabilizers in it, it is not the 100% pure tallow others are wanting. But this is exactly what I want! This means it can sit in a shelf stable environment for much longer than pure fat which goes rancid quicker... and it's so easy to work with AND for skin purposes it still works amazing and everyone that's bought it has repeat purchased.

If I were to use it in cold process soap I would start by using less maybe half?), so the soaps don't go soft, and then alter amount from there. And/or consider adding another harder butter too.

My favourite oil is tallow. I use it in my soaps and hand/face creams.

Tallow review

I purchased this tallow for cold process soap. I have used tallow in soap before but not from Voyager. I agree with some previous reviews that this tallow is quite soft and does not produce a harder bar of soap. My batch was quite soft and I only used 18%. I would not recommend this tallow for CP soap.

Tallow review

I found this tallow is soft therefore it did not work well in my whipped tallow butter like another tallow I had used previously.
I used in making cold process soap and after 24 hours the soap was soft but not sure if that is normal.

Great in CP

I have used this before, but wasn't sure about purchasing again given the negative review. If there was an issue with previous batches, it has been addressed. The tallow I received is pure white, thick and consistent in texture. It soaps perfectly. Happy to have this available for CP when I'm unable to get it from local ranchers.
