Using Himalayan rhubarb powder as a soap colorant is an excellent choice for those seeking a natural and unique way to add vibrant hues to their handmade soaps. Himalayan rhubarb (Rheum australe) is a plant native to the Himalayan region, and its powdered form offers a beautiful range of earthy and warm colors, ranging from soft pinks to deeper reds, depending on the concentration used.

The use of Himalayan rhubarb powder as a soap colorant provides a natural, plant-based alternative to synthetic dyes, appealing to those looking for eco-friendly and sustainable soapmaking practices. Additionally, the beautiful shades derived from this powder give each soap creation a distinctive and visually appealing touch, making it an attractive choice for both beginning and advanced soap makers.

  1. Prepare. The best way to incorporate maximize the colour capabilities of this herb is through an oil based infusion that you can add directly to your cold process soap.
  2. Choose the Carrier Oil: Select a carrier oil that complements your soap recipe and skin needs. Olive oil is a popular choice due to its gentle properties, but you can use other oils based on your preferences and the specific benefits you want to incorporate into your soap.
  3. Combine Herbs and Oil: Place the herbs into a clean glass jar. Pour the carrier oil over the herbs until they are fully submerged. Stir gently to ensure all the herbs are mixed into the oil.
  4. Infusing the Oil: Seal the glass jar tightly with its lid. Allow the herbs to infuse in the oil for at least 2 to 6 weeks. The longer the infusion time, the stronger the color and properties will be transferred to the oil. Some people will place in a warm spot as it can help infusion.
  5. Shake Occasionally: To enhance the infusion process, gently shake the jar every few days to ensure the herbs continue to release their properties into the oil.
  6. Strain the Infused Oil: After the desired infusion time has passed, strain the oil to remove the plant material. Use a fryer oil strainer or layer cheesecloth over the funnel to strain the oil into a clean container.
  7. Package into an easy Pour Bottle for Ease of Use.
  8. Incorporate into Cold Process Soap: Once your infused oil is ready, incorporate it into your cold process soap recipe as you would with any other oil. Adjust the amount based on your desired color intensity, keeping in mind that natural colorants might not be as vibrant as synthetic options.

Remember that the final color of your cold process soap will depend on various factors, including the infusion time, and the saponification process. Conduct a small test batch to determine the color outcome before making a larger batch of soap.
